Since my last post I've finished my undergrad degree (wooty!) and wandered off to China for two weeks (I highly recommend taking a trip over there - and DEFINITELY go to the Great Wall...it is amazing). Anyway, that is my super short and sweet update so lets get down to business.
We found a house in Midland we both fell in love with. Loved the
location, the size of the house (not too big and not too small), and it
had a pool (jackpot!) So the problem you ask? All three bids submitted
were rejected only to find out that we can't bid until November of this
year. Long story short there is a 2 year minimum between buying a HUD
house as an owner occupant...did I teach you all something new today?
Hope so! We started scrambling to fix up the little baby Auburn house
to get her in rental shape (first fixer upper...can't part ways with
her), but due to the two year ordeal now we're just chopping down that
to do list for ourselves to enjoy!
In the midst of all the above, we were working on a house and that project has come to a halt. To increase the curb appeal we had purchased lots of little lovelies for the house, but since the project is on hold and the plants need to get in the ground (said in the same voice as get in my belly) I stole them for Auburn. Enter: Yoda of Gardening - my mother - she'll make a garden jedi (or something) out of me yet. I even ran to the store the other day and left with plants...it was very bizarre...and very foreign.
Landscaping has been on the list since we moved in, but I never really knew where to start or what to do. I didn't even know how to clear the existing <strike>bed </strike>weeds to prep the spot for planting. Do you spray with weed killer and then pull? Or just go for it and start pulling what you can? We went with the just start pulling and go for it method. Here's what we started with:

So what did I learn about landscaping?

Fall is a great time to plant and everything is on sale around this time. The purple asters were 2 dollars a pop and the pink mums ran 4 dollars a piece (just to give you an idea!)

Buy smaller plants instead of bigger/full grown plants. Why? You spend so much less if you go this route. You're still getting lovely color and will eventually have full grown plants in a few years. We spent 170 total on plants (not all are shown) and supplies (purchased some garden soil, transplant nutrients, etc.)

Use a tarp of some sort to avoid getting soil on your lawn...we didn't and there are spots with lots of dirt from removing the weeds and grasses that were growing before.

It really isn't that bad/is actually pretty fun and somewhat addicting (you've been warned).

This sounds crazy, but ever since we started fixing up the exterior of the house I'm excited to live here. When I pull into the driveway I can't help but smile at all the beautiful colors and know that it was something we all worked on together (Yoda and Loges)

This should be a given I suppose, but water the plants every day :)

I suppose that's all I have for this afternoon, but I just wanted to share my new found joy for playing in the dirt! Hope this might help encourage anyone to take a stab at landscaping/gardening :) Enjoy the rest of this lovely fall day!
I just recently started trying to complete things I've been pinning and the first two attempts were food related...my tummy is thanking me for doing, not just pinning. Anyway, the two recipes I found: Beef Quesadilla Casserole and One Pot Creamy Mac and Cheese. Both = awesome.

I'm not picking favorites with recipes, but this one is by far the easiest and quickest mac and cheese I've ever whipped up from scratch. So we'll start with the mac and cheese first.
Beef Quesadilla Casserole:

This recipe is from a McCormick Spice inspiration packet, but I used a taco seasoning packet instead of the spices - feel free to choose which one you'd like to use!

Time: about half an hour

You Will Need:

1 lb. ground beef
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 cans (8 oz. each) tomato sauce
1 can (4-1/2 oz.) chopped green chiles, undrained**I also omitted the green chiles from my recipe, but again feel free to put into the mix what YOU like :)**
6 flour tortillas (8-inch)
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese.
1 packet McCormick Recipe Inspirations Quesadilla Casserole
or your choice of Taco Seasoning packet (I used Old El Paso Mild Taco Seasoning)

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350 while cooking the beef!

1. Brown beef and onion in large skillet on Medium-High heat; drain. Add tomato sauce, beans, corn and green chiles; mix well. Stir in all of the Spices (or your choice of taco seasoning packet!) except red pepper. Bring to boil. Reduce heat to Low; simmer 5 minutes. Add red pepper to taste, if desired.

2. Spread 1/2 cup of the beef mixture on bottom of 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking dish sprayed with no-stick cooking spray. Top with 3 of the tortillas, overlapping as needed. Layer with 1/2 of the remaining beef mixture and 1/2 of the cheese. Repeat with remaining tortillas, beef mixture and cheese.

3. Bake in preheated 350 degrees F oven 15 minutes or until heated through. Let stand 5 minutes before serving.

4. Enjoy!
Family update news: we got a cat! When Logan was living in Florida many moons ago, she wandered up to his door and just let her sweet little self in and decided to stay with the guy. She's a traveling cat as she's lived in Washington DC; Jackonsville, FL and now in the mitten! She's a cultural creature of sorts and we love her! Her name you ask? Ace. Here she is!
Anyway, on to project news. A little bit of teamwork led to a homemade sofa table. It's a very simple process if you're looking to do a little DIY. The materials and tools you'll need for this:

Wood (take in your measurements and Lowe's will cut the wood for you at the store!)

L-brackets

Screws

Spray paint or stain in your color of choice + polyurethane gloss (if you'd like a glossy finish)

Sand paper

Power drill

I didn't take step by step photos (one of these days I will), but this is what the table will look like pre-finish:

Logan ended up putting this part together (he surprised me, so sweet!) but take your cut wood, L-brackets, screws and power drill for this part!

1. Place two of the shorter boards at the ends of the longest piece of wood and pre-drill three holes into each end. Take long screws and drill those into the pre-drilled holes.

2. If you need a third piece of wood for support, repeat the step above.

3. Flip the table over and place the L-brackets where you would like them (we did two per support). Using a pencil, mark the holes to pre-drill. Pre-drill the holes and using smaller screws, drill the screws into the L-brackets.

4. Sand the surface (power sander works so much faster than by hand, but work with what you've got!)

5. Finish the table with whichever form of paint or stain you'd like. I used gloss spray paint at first and while that worked for the backside and underside of the table, it wasn't my favorite for the top. So, sanding round two occurred and I used Minwax Ebony stain on all visible portions of the table + polyurethane gloss when the stain was dry.

You do not need a lot of stain or gloss finish - I bought the itty bitty containers and I have plenty left over!

The finished product is currently in use and here's some photos to see what she looks like:
She is currently based in Florida (we miss her up here in the mitten though!) and has been creating up an art storm down yander. She self-describes her work as having a "quirky whimsical feeling" and I couldn't agree more. I hope you enjoy exploring her artworks and feel free to contact her about pieces for sale or just to send a compliment her way!
Hope this finds everyone doing well and enjoying these beautiful fall days we're having (time for raking leaves, anyone?)
I've made some great buys at Michael's and Hobby Lobby here in town, but I'm still searching for the right combo before I hang everything up on the wall.

I also picked up a 7 pack of 12x12 canvases while shopping the other day and made use of two of 'em tonight. L's sister got married in April (it was one of the most beautiful weddings I've ever been to--it was even blogged about, here) and the photographer (little bit 'o sunshine) snapped a shot of me fixing L's handkerchief...I eventually framed it and the photo has been sitting around the house for several months (typical!)

Anyway, back to the present...so I thought let's do something with initials. I googled clip art for M & R for our last names and found an image of R in sign language - ding! I could draw out the initials in sign language on the canvases and incorporate the picture somehow - perfect! Honestly, I think it took me longer to hang the pictures (I'm terrible at being precise...not my forte) than it did to draw and paint the images.

Materials used:
- black acrylic liquitex basics paint
- two 12x12 canvases
- pencil
- paint brush

Here is the final result:
Ever. I have one week of freedom (kind of) left before school starts and runs my life again. Boy have I taken advantage of that! Touch up paint throughout the house: check, fix holes in the wall: check, kitchen backsplash: check, clean: check....is it messy already? major check. oops!

Anyway, so our budget doesn't exactly have room for a pretty tiled backsplash...but we do have room for some craft paint and stencils! Off to Michael's I went in search of some inspiration for crafting....and I walked out with some Martha Stewart stencils and Folk Art paint in Champagne, meowza! I also remembered while purchasing my lovely champagne colored paint a post from Young House Love. This post from YHL was of little miss Clara's closet makeover....it involved a potato and paint - Sherry and John = creative!

On to the kitchen!

The project was an hour labor of love...put on the Pandora and paint away! I did not measure the spacing between the stenciling, just eyeballed everything and used scotch tape to keep the stencil in position.
Now all we need is a dishwasher....hmmm! :)

cookie monster!

The coveted wooden crate!

Time to do some work! We were in need of a recycling bin for our cans that we take back to the store (hello there 10 cent refund - directly into the vacation jar! woot woot!) I had been hunting for a crate for awhile...there were some awesome vintage finds (old crates for cherries, soda, etc) but they were 15 bucks a piece and I couldn't really see the point when I knew I wanted the bin to say recycle. Alas, my crate and I were united. I used stencil letters and chalk to outline where I wanted it to say recycle. **In hindsight, I probably should've had the word recycle going on a diagonal rather than horizontal, but oh well!**

One letter left to go! (:

Fill in the chalk lettering with your choice of paint - I used Dazzling Metallics Elegant Finish in Crystal Green (green only seemed fitting for the project!) from Michael's. This is a really quick project - perfect for a rainy afternoon :)

In all her glory...full to the brim.

You could certainly use this idea for more than recycling - you could have a towel crate, or even store toilet paper in your bathroom; if you have kids - each kid could decorate their own bin and keep the crate by the front door as the drop box for backpacks, shoes, hats, etc; or could store magazines and books in a crate, DVDs...anything you want really! Sky is the limit :) What would you use a wooden bin for?
So I went off in search of a project...meet Ethan. My old desk from when I was a kid that was still (amazingly) in my parents garage.
I really wanted to refinish the entire thing, but I was feeling antsy...I have that problem quite a bit! So I settled on refinishing the hardware. Enter, spray paint. Ah, my love of spray paint! I used Peacock House, Mediterranean, Baby Blue, Pewter Grey and Aged Copper. All lovely colors alone, but even better when layered together. I also used a dry paint brush to add some textured to make them look aged. I really like that each piece of hardware is different as each one was spray painted in a different way. Just gives it a nice touch :) Enjoy!
Sadly, pops had a meeting he needed to get to and we couldn't stop. As soon as I had access to a car I headed over to this treasure trove. The fruits of my labor resulted in these beauts:

<img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyS4oqM87ZlFCxv04KLjpA1lOCbM07f-iNMrB9NoUaIDW5Yevi5m2ET4vI-NkOfO9dnjxZ_Guf0vUC2f1QdjaSa1BJtRkFDE7T8WhN2FZVYYcqN0k96VfZ_OQLr3NXCYvlgZkotq3tnkTp/s400/photo.JPG" t$="true" width="298" />

2 dollars a piece...jackpot!

I was in need of some chairs to go with the back porch table....in fact the porch hasn't been used once this summer, depressing? I think yes. I meandered over to Joann Fabrics and Crafts in search of some lovely fabric for my new found friends. I ended up with a gorgeous outdoor blue and white patterned fabric. Outdoor fabric is typically a pretty penny compared to indoor fabrics - good news though, Joann's usually has coupons out for around 40% off...use 'em!

The pending project sat in my garage for about a week...or maybe two? until I finally got down to business. I hit up my favorite homestore ever, Lowe's, to buy some Valspar gloss spray paint in white. It took just shy of four cans to complete the painting of the chairs - I would suggest just purchasing paint in a can as it would probably be a better bang for your buck...I was just feeling lazy ;)

The final product turned out a little something like this:
I suggest sanding any project you're about to work on (assuming it's wood!) and depending on the color you're wanting to paint the project you may or may not want to prime. Since I painted the chairs white, I didn't prime these puppies, just did several coats of paint.

For reupholstering the chair, I'm definitely not an expert. I traced the pattern of the seat onto the back of the fabric leaving enough room to have an ample amount of fabric for stapling. It is entirely up to you on whether or not you would like to replace the foam padding (craft stores will have this!) I get a little excited when I do projects and I didn't replace the padding...it would've been an extra trip into town and I just wanted to get down to business - plan ahead! Once you've sorted your foam and fabric begin to staple the fabric cut out onto the backside of the seat. I'm still trying to figure out the best way to staple corners so if anyone out there has some tips, I'd LOVE to hear from you!! Make any tweaks necessary and then you're ready to re-attach the seat to your newly painted chair!

Garage sale season = love. Happy hunting!
I found a gift off of their registry, but I really wanted to add a little extra something for a personal touch. So I decided to make the couple a throw pillow...nothing too big, nothing terribly time consuming and something either can make use of.

It started when I viewed an idea for using doilies, fabric paint and a canvas tote as seen on the blog Under the Sycamore: http://ashleyannphotography.com/blog/2009/11/21/diy-doily-canvas-bag/

super cute, right?

Ashley Ann's tutorial is wonderful so please feel free to review the how-to from the link above!

Instead of using the tote, I purchased white canvas-like fabric (sidenote: I made the mistake of purchasing fabric that was too thin and see-through the first time around....so I had to do the project twice--practice makes perfect, right?) to create an envelope pillow case. TheCraftyGemini has an excellent tutorial on how to make an envelope pillow case, you can find the link here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhZnHhbcN-Q

1. Stenciled the front of the pillow case using different sized doilies and different colors of fabric paint. I did not use spray adhesive, however I would recommend it.

2. Let the front piece of fabric dry while you complete the "envelope" portion of the pillow case, or backside. Iron and sew the raw edges of the envelope of the pillow case.

3. Once the fabric is dry sew the front and back pieces of fabric together per the YouTube tutorial.

4. Find a font that you like for an initial or message on the back of the pillow case. Print out the initial and/or message, date, etc.

5. The fabric is semi see through so just place the printed piece of paper underneath the fabric - pin in place using push pins and paint away! Please note: Complete this portion AFTER you've sewn the two pieces of fabric together to ensure everything is centered and the way you want it to look!

There you have it, a handmade gift that your loved ones can't find in a store!

Enjoy!
The house was basically move in ready around early March and I just now got around to finishing the spare room! Time gets away from ya, I swear! This is what we were dealin' with before a paint job was done, pink and purple walls! Rut row?
I still have a sleeper sofa that we somehow...magically...got into the house and into the spare room. I ended up spending around $120 to spruce up the room. The money was mainly spent on lighting (needed a lamp!), bedding for our guests, and a few little pieces to give the room some personality.
Today, I'll share a little secret with you.

L and I have a secret language...seriously. We use it in times of need (I'm pretty sure people close to us have figured out a majority of our "secret" language, but we use it anyway). We have a code word for "I forgot this person's name and I need you to help me out by introducing yourself first please" which comes in handy big time! Most importantly, I'll share what s'mores means, only because it's what generated the idea for this blog.

S'mores means love. C'est l'amour, amore, amor! I'm sure you can guess how we stumbled upon this one--L+M= LOVE chocolate, and anything that goes with it! So naturally it became the word of choice for love...although L's dad was convinced it meant sex, we had to tell him sadly no, the word for that was pizza (just kidding!!)

So the idea behind the title of the blog is love: a way of life. Love your interests, embracing a passion, sharing love with your friends and family, even that special somebody. It is more or less, a sometimes silly, sometimes on a whim, and even sometimes a difficult journey, but it is always filled with love.

fam bam circa early 90s...check out those outfits!

Hopefully, I'll be able to share projects I've worked on, houses I've helped rehab (ok, let's be serious, I come in when it is time to paint, but shhh!), recipes we've tried in the kitchen, or even trips...love me some road trips! Not exactly sure what this blog will morph into, but I can't wait to find out.

Normally, I am all for that sort of a day...productivity just goes out the window. Today, was just not that kind of drizzly day, productivity was in full swing. Sidenote, I love the Google logo today - the guitar makes music when you run your mouse over the strings! So fun!
It was wheelin' and dealin' day for L (super special someone), and I just happened to be his trustworthy side-kick tagging along. We ended up finding out that a bid L had submitted on a property was accepted--it also happened to be the property we were brewing up ideas for this morning! This sent me into overdrive, how can this place be updated and flow beautifully throughout the house? I immediately went to my magazine stash when I got home, bless that little (okay, large!) stash. I was able to find a few solid ideas after rooting around a bit!
This clipping is from 100 Decorating Ideas Big Style for Small Rooms. This color scheme just gives off a light, airy and relaxing vibe. yes please! I love that they suggested to paint the floor white to reflect more light (I've been dying to actually paint a floor!) Fingers crossed!
The current kitchen needs a little bit of lovin'. It is very similar to this lay out but has open shelving on top, cabinets on the bottom and the paint color is blue. We are talking blue walls and countertops...which are actually brand new, so it would be amazing if we could save the countertops, but blue? I just feel iffy about that...any ideas? I really love the glass cabinet doors! The space definitely needs more storage, maybe cabinets with glass doors is this answer...we shall see.

Two rooms semi solved, for now, but tomorrow is always a new day...and a new mood. Maybe I'll change my mind and decide I actually do like the brick red color upstairs...just maybe!
in the words of my pops,
